Lake Buena Vista

Saturday Morning, March 3-Hosted by the Mid-Florida Milers-Year-Round Trail

Start address: Pirates Cove Adventure Golf, located at the Crossroads shopping complex, SR 535, 1 block north of the SR 535/I-4 interchange (Exit 68).
Time: Register any time between 9:00 & 9:45 a.m.
Trail: Walk the 10 km route into Downtown Disney via the Saratoga Springs Vacation Villas. Pets are not allowed. Wheelchairs and strollers OK.

Distance: 10K (6 miles). A shorter 5K trail can be walked.
Cost: $3 for AVA/IVV Credit; Non-credit walkers can walk for free.

Directions: From Orlando go west (east from Tampa) on Interstate 4 and take Exit 68, Lake Buena Vista (SR 535). Turn north (right from Orlando, left from Tampa) on SR 535 (Apopka Vineland Rd) to the first traffic light. Turn right into the Crossroads Shopping Center. Pirate’s Cove is straight ahead.

The Happy Wanderers will host a group walk of their Daytona year-round trail. The 10K walk will start at City Island at 1:00 p.m. (Register at 12:30 p.m.) See directions below for start location.

Trail: This beautiful walk takes you across the Intracoastal Waterway and past the Historic Jackie Robinson Baseball Stadium where he made his first appearance as a major league ballplayer. Stroll along the restored downtown area and lovely Riverfront Park. Cross the new ISB high-rise bridge with tile mosaics of Florida wildlife. Wander down Main Street, home of the annual “Bikeweek” and “Biketoberfest” festivities. Meander through the marvelous new Oceanwalk complex with its great shops and restaurants. Your Daytona adventure ends as you stroll down the “World’s Most Famous Beach”! Not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs. Pets are not allowed on the beach. A sidewalk on Atlantic Ave parallels the beach and may be used as an alternate route during high tide or for strollers and wheelchairs.

March 10 Georgia AVA Club Walk

March 10
Our next event will be a Group Walk on March 10th meeting at the Jimmy Carter Library and walking our Atlanta’s Year Round Event. Come join us at 9:30 AM for registration and walk at 10:00 AM. Jimmy Carter Library is located at 441 Freedom Parkway, Atlanta, Georgia ,30307-1498.

Stone Mountain YRE:
Effectively immediately, our main Start Point (Stones) for our Stone Mountain YRE has closed. Please use our Alternate Start Point at the Stone Mountain Police Station at 922 Main Street for our walk. Their hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

We will be looking for another place that will be opened over the weekends.

Florida Walks

Blue Spring State Park – Saturday Morning, February 24

The First Coast Trail Forgers plan a group walk of the Blue Spring State Park year-round event. They plan to leave the Jacksonville area at 7:45 a.m. Those who will travel directly to the park should be at Blue Spring by 9:45. Registration for the YRE is at the Entrance Station. Tell the attendant you are a volkssporter who plans to take the FVA walk and that you are meeting others to do so. Since parking at the entrance station is limited, consider car-pooling with others.

Trail: The walk is a shaded walk on paved park road, unpaved campground and cabin roads, park service roads, hiking trails, Blue Run and Spring Boil boardwalks. Tour Thursby House, read several display boards on boardwalk and see manatees in winter. Blue Spring State Park YRE is sponsored by the Florida Volkssport Association and is a “Walk Florida State Parks” event.

Directions: From I-4, take Exit 114, SR 472 west for 3.1 mi., US 17-92 south for 1.7 mi.,

right on W. French Ave. for 2 mi., and left into Park. Entrance fee $5 per vehicle.

Be aware that Blue Spring State Park gets crowded in the winter and that the park will temporarily close the gates to visitors when the maximum number they allow has been reached.

New Smyrna Beach - Sunday Afternoon, February 25

The Happy Wanderers will host a group walk of their New Smyrna Beach year-round trail. The 10K walk will start at the New Smyrna Beach Publix Supermarket, 709 E. 3rd Ave., at 1:00 p.m. (Register at 12:30 p.m.)

Trail: Route takes you along a scenic causeway, through parks, the restored downtown historic district, past the ruins of the circa 1830’s fort (site of extensive archaeological digs), cross the Indian River and onto an expansive Atlantic beach. Trail is not suitable for wheelchairs and strollers will have difficulty on the beach. Alternate route which bypasses the beach is available.

Directions: From I-95 take Exit 249 onto Highway 44. Drive East on Hwy 44 for 5.8 miles. Just past Sun Trust Bank turn right into Publix parking lot.

Next Fun Forger Walks!

We hope to see you at our next group walk this Saturday 2/24 starting at 10 AM (sign in at 9:45 AM) to walk the Florida Volkssport Association’s Year Round Event at Blue Spring State Park, outside Orange City, FL. We will carpool from a parking lot at the intersection of I-95 and St. Augustine Road (Exit #335). Coming from the North (or South) exit I-95 and turn LEFT (West) on St. Augustine Rd. Drive to the shopping center on your left. We will be in the parking lot between the Bank of America and Publix and will leave at 7:45 AM. Please plan to arrive at 7:30 AM. Ellie or Gordon Lindblom will not be carpooling, so if you are carpooling and would like to coordinate the people who are carpooling, please contact E or G at 904-230-1260.

Start Point Address / Driving Directions:
Blue Spring State Park Entrance Gate - 2100 West French Ave., Orange City, FL (386) 775-3663. From I-4 westbound, take exit 114; SR 472 West 3.1 miles; US 17-92 South 1.7 miles; right on West French Ave. 2.0 miles, left into Park. From I-4 eastbound, exit 111B, west on Saxon Blvd. 1.3 miles; right on Enterprise one mile; right on US 17-92 two miles; left on West French Ave. two miles, left into Park.
Event Description: Daily, 8 to dusk. Trail is rated 1+ and not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs. Pets are not allowed in campgrounds and concessions or on beaches and boardwalks. One brochure lists all FVA State Park walks. You must pay a park entrance fee. Park fills up rapidly on weekends, causing Rangers to close gates. Go early on weekends, or call ahead. 60% shaded walk on paved park road, unpaved campground road, service road, hiking trail, Blue Run and Spring Boil Boardwalk where manatees are present in colder winter months.

Our next walk will be the downtown Jacksonville Riverwalk on March 17, (St. Patrick’s Day). We will have a meeting and lunch after the walk in a place to be announced. Please mark your calendars

Our Saturday 2/24 walk has been changed to Blue Spring State Park by popular demand. Please mark your calendars. We will carpool to both walks from a parking lot at the intersection of I-95 and St. Augustine Road (Exit #335). Coming from the North (or South) exit I-95 and turn LEFT (West) on St. Augustine Rd. Drive to the shopping center on your left. We will be in the parking lot between the Bank of America and Publix and will leave at 8 AM. Granada Pier Bait & Tackle Shop, 1 South Beach St, Ormond Beach, FL. From I-95 take Exit 268 (SR40) and drive east on Granada Ave (SR40) to Beach St (approximately 4.3 miles). Turn right onto S. Beach St and drive 1/2 block and turn left into the parking lot at the bait and tackle shop. Park in the parking lot to the left side of bait shop.

Event Description: Daily, 6am-8pm. Trail is rated 1+. Strollers may have difficulty on bridge and beach. Not suitable for wheelchairs. Pets are not allowed on the beach or in the park. This beautiful walk takes you through horticultural gardens, past the Memorial Art Gallery, past John D. Rockefeller’s winter home - The Casements - and down millionaires row and onto the fantastic beaches of Ormond, “the birthplace of speed” and along the Halifax River and the boardwalk. If you do not wish to walk on the beach, a sidewalk runs parallel to the beach on Atlantic Ave. You will also pass by an Ancient Timucuan Indian Burial Mound.
