Maitland

Saturday Morning, February 3

Hosted by the Mid-Florida Milers

Year-Round Event Trail

Start address: Walgreens, at 330 S. Orlando Ave., Maitland.

Time: Registration is between 9:00 & 9:45 a.m. Walkers can begin as soon as they register.

Trail: A delightful tree-lined and shaded walk around Lakes Catherine and Sybellia and through residential areas. This is a Railroad Heritage walk. Pets are allowed, but must be on a leash.

Distance: Choice of two trails, a 10K (6 miles) or a 5K (3 miles) trail.

Cost: $3 for AVA/IVV Credit; Non-credit walkers can walk for free.

Directions: From Orlando take Interstate 4 east to Exit 90A, Maitland Blvd., and exit right; from Daytona use exit 90 and turn left to the second light, Maitland Ave. Turn right, go 1.3 miles to Packwood (1 block past Horatio). Turn left, go past Police station on left and cross Orlando Ave. to Walgreens parking lot. From Sanford or Orlando drive on US 17/92 to Maitland.

Palm Coast - Sunday Afternoon, February 4

The Happy Wanderers will host a group walk of their Palm Coast year-round trail. The 10K walk will start at the Publix Supermarket parking lot, 298 Palm Coast Pkwy NE, Palm Coast, at 1:00 p.m. (Register at 12:30 p.m.)

Trail: This walk takes you through lovely shaded residential areas and past one of the premier golf courses in Florida. Visit the eastside shopping district filled with many wonderful restaurants and shops. Stroll along a scenic walking path through the woods and along the Matanzas River.

Directions: 298 Palm Coast Pkwy NE. From I-95 take Exit 289 onto Palm Coast Pkwy. Drive east on Palm Coast Pkwy to Florida Park Dr (approximately 0.6 mile). Turn left onto Florida Park Dr and follow Florida Park Dr approximately .1 of a mile to the entrance to Palm Harbor Shopping Center. Turn left and enter the parking lot.

Chuluota Wilderness Walk

Saturday Morning, February 17

A Regular Event Hosted by the Mid-Florida Milers

Start address: Chuluota Baptist Church, 200 Lake Mills Rd., Chuluota.

Time: Register at the church any time between 9:00 & 11:00 a.m. Participants should plan so they can finish by 2:00 p.m.

Trail: After registering, walkers will drive four miles to the trail head at Chuluota Wilderness. Covering about 625 acres, the Chuluota Wilderness area is part of the Seminole County Natural Lands Program. It contains a variety of natural systems such as mesic hammock, pond pine flatwoods, hardwood swamp and some rare habitats such as sand pine scrub. These in turn provide food and shelter for an equally diverse population of wildlife which includes white-tailed deer, gopher tortoise, sherman’s fox squirrel.

Pets are allowed but must be kept on a leash.

After the walk, a lunch will be available at Chuluota Baptist Church for $5. Please reserve lunch ahead of time by calling 407-366-2235 or emailing midfloridamilers@hotmail.com by February 12. No pre-registration is necessary for the walk.

Distance: Choice of two trails, a 10K (6 miles) or a 5K (3 miles) trail.

Cost: $3 for AVA/IVV Credit; Non-credit walkers can walk for free.

Directions: From Orlando proceed east to SR 434 (Alafaya Tr.) and drive north to Oviedo. Turn RIGHT at Mitchell Hammock and drive to light at ‘T’ at Lockwood. Turn LEFT to SR 419 and turn RIGHT to Lake Mills Rd. There is a Lake Mills Park sign. Turn LEFT to the church immediately on the right. Drive north towards Sanford on SR 417 to Red Bug Lake Rd. exit 41. Turn RIGHT and follow as above to Lockwood and follow instructions. From Daytona and Sanford on SR 417, turn LEFT on Exit 41, Red Bug Lake Rd. and follow instructions.

Description: This is a 5 and 10 km walk. The sanctuary has been a place of beauty and tranquility for 70+ years and is in full bloom in February and March. The Carillion is played 2 times this afternoon at 1 and 3:00. See our brochure for more info.

The Happy Wanderers will host a group walk of their Port Orange-YMCA year-round trail. The 10K walk will start at 4701 City Center Pkwy., Port Orange, at 1:00 p.m. (Register at 12:30 p.m.)

FCTFWC Group Walk Satuday 1/27

Don’t forget our Gainesville group walk this Saturday 1/27. We will be carpooling from the parking lot on the Southeast corner of Route 13 and Racetrack Road between the Bank of America and the Food Lion store. Please be there at 7:45 AM. We will leave at 8:00 AM for a 10:00 AM start at the VA Hospital pavilion in Gainesville.

Our Headforger will get the start box from the Holiday Inn and take it to the pavilion. Everyone should go directly to the pavilion. A map to the VA Hospital may accessed from the site below:

Stay on Archer Rd to SW 13th St. (Note the VA Hospital on the right of Archer Rd as you approach town). Left onto SW 13th St. Holiday Inn is located on the right at the corner of West University Ave and SW 13th St. Pick up start box at front desk, register and drive to VA Hospital on Archer Rd. Park in visitor’s parking lot off of SW 16th Ave. Lot is accessible from Archer Rd. Start walk at the hospital picnic pavilion. City is crowded on Gator home game weekends. Please call ahead to check.
Event Description: Daily, dawn to dusk. Trail is rated 1 and is suitable for strollers and wheelchairs but extreme caution must be exercised at busy street crossings. Pets must be leashed, under control. Part of this trail is on a boardwalk path to Lake Alice and is not recommended to be done alone or at near dusk. The walk is around the beautiful University of Florida campus, home of the Florida Gators. The University is the oldest in the state of Florida. The northeast quadrant of the campus is on the Register of Historic Places. This walk qualifies for the College Campus walking program.

Start Point: Columbia Visitors Center, 803-254-0479, 1101 Lincoln Street. From I-26 to downtown Columbia to SC 48 (Assembly St). Right on Assembly and go 9 blocks to Senate St. Turn right on Senate and go 2 blocks to Lincoln. Turn left on Lincoln.

From I-20 & I-77, take SC 277 exit toward Columbia (Northeastern FRWY which becomes Bull Street) to Elmwood Ave. Right on Elmwood to Assembly (3rd light). Left on Assembly and follow directions above to Lincoln.

Parking: On the right at end of building. Go through the side doors at the other end of the building (where the glass windows are) and turn right.

Orlando- Hunters Creek Vista Park

Start address: Vista Park is a community park within Hunters Creek residential area that has access to the Shingle Creek Management Area. See, listed below, the driving directions to the start point.

Time: Registration is between 9:00 & 11:00 a.m. Plan so you can finish by 2:00 p.m. Walkers can begin as soon as they register.

Trail: The 10 km trail enters and loops through the Shingle Creek Management Area, then continues into Hunter’s Creek residential areas near SR 417. Shingle Creek is a headwater of the Everglades. Pets are not allowed.

All walkers are invited to eat lunch at the Ale House on John Young Parkway after the walk.

Distance: Choice of two trails, a 10K (6 miles) or a 5K (3 miles) trail.

Cost: $3 for AVA/IVV Credit; Non-credit walkers can walk for free.

Directions: From Daytona and Orlando on I 4 use John Young Parkway (Exit 79) and turn right (south). Pass Sand Lake Rd., the Beachline, and go under SR 417. At the next light, Town Center Blvd., turn right to Hunters Vista (1 mile, at light). Turn right to Vista Park 1 mile north. From Tampa, use I-4 exit 62 onto SR 417. Use Exit 10 and turn right to Town Center Blvd. Follow directions above. From Cocoa use the Beachline to Exit 3 or SR 417 to Exit 10 then south to Town Center Blvd and follow as above.

Ponce Inlet Lighthouse - Sunday Afternoon, January 21

The Happy Wanderers will host a group walk of their Ponce Inlet Lighthouse year-round trail. The 10K walk will start at Ponce De Leon Inlet Lighthouse Gift Shop, 4931 S. Peninsula Dr., Ponce Inlet, at 1:00 p.m. (Register at 12:30 p.m.)

Trail: Part of this walk is on the prettiest section of the world’s most famous beach, strolling along and through designated scenic routes, lovely residential neighborhoods, Lighthouse Point County Park, nature trails, past the Marine Science Center and the Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center. Ponce Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse on the east coast and provides an awesome view of the area from the observation deck (small admission fee at both the Lighthouse and Marine Science Center). This is a Riverwalk America and a Lighthouse USA walk.

Directions: From I-95 take Exit 256. Drive east on (SR421) Dunlawton Ave. Cross Intracoastal Waterway to S. Atlantic Ave (Hwy A1A) approximately 5.2 miles. Right on S. Atlantic Ave and drive approximately 5.3 miles to Beach St. Right on Beach St and drive one block to S. Peninsula and turn left. Drive approximately 3/10 of a mile to parking lot at Lighthouse Park and Gift Shop.

Florida AVA Walks

St. Augustine - Sunday Afternoon, January 14

The Happy Wanderers will host a group walk of their St. Augustine year-round trail. The 10K walk will start at Mission’s Shrine Gift Shop, 27 Ocean Ave., St. Augustine, at 2:00 p.m. (Register at 1:30 p.m.)

Trail: Take a walk through history as you tour the wonders of “the oldest city in the United States”. Pass by the old Spanish fort, Castillo San Marco, continue through a National Cemetery, numerous historical sites, horse-drawn carriages, unique shops and restaurants, the magnificent edifice of Flagler College. Tour the superb Lightner Museum (small admission fee).

Directions: Driving north on I-95 take Exit 311 onto SR207. Turn right (NE) onto SR207. Drive 5.1 miles to US Hwy 1. Turn left onto US1, Drive 1.4 miles to traffic signal at West Castillo Dr. Turn right onto West Castillo. Drive 0.3 miles to San Marco Ave. Turn left onto San Marco Ave and drive 0.4 miles to Ocean Ave. Turn right onto Ocean Ave and drive 0.1 mile to first entrance into parking lot. Turn right into parking lot and the Shrine Gift Shop will be on your left. Driving south on I-95 take Exit 318 onto Hwy 16, the Green Cove Springs/St. Augustine exit (also the Outlet Mall exit). Turn left (east) onto Hwy 16. Drive 5.6 miles to San Marco Ave and turn right (south) onto San Marco Ave. Drive 0.9 mile to Ocean Ave and turn left (east) onto Ocean Ave. Drive 0.1 mile to first entrance to parking lot. Turn right into parking lot and the Shrine Gift Shop will be on your left.

Jan 7 Happy Wanderers Walk

DeLand - Sunday Afternoon, January 7

The Happy Wanderers will host a group walk of their DeLand year-round trail. The 10K walk will start at the Volusia County Public Library, 130 E. Howry Ave., DeLand, at 1:00 p.m. (Register at 12:30 p.m.)

Trail: Mostly sidewalks, some dirt paths and grass. Strollers and wheelchairs can overcome slight difficulties. Hand-held leashed pets welcome except inside buildings. The stately oaks are the result of the interests and endeavors of Henry DeLand who founded the city in 1876. Stetson University was founded in 1886 by hat magnate John S!tetson. The University contains the Gillespie Museum and the Sampson Gallery of Arts. This is a College Campus Event!

Directions to the library: From I-4, take Exit 118 and follow Hwy. 44 approximately 4.3 miles to Amelia Ave. Turn left onto Amelia Ave. (traffic signal at Hwy. 44 & Amelia) and drive one block to Howry Ave. Turn right onto Howry and drive about two blocks and the Library will be on your left.

Description: Register between 900-945. Walk the 10 km route into Downtown Disney via the Saratoga Springs Vacation Villas. Pets are not allowed. Wheelchairs and strollers OK.

Directions: Use I-4 west from Orlando and take Exit 68 and travel north (right from Orlando, left from Tampa) on SR 535 (Apopka Vineland Road) to the first traffic light. Turn right into the Crossroads Shopping Center. Continue straight ahead to the Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf Course.

17 March, Saturday, Winter Park, Crosby YMCA

Description: Register between 900-945. This is a 12 km walk (7.4 mi) along oak shaded Winter Park downtown and residential neighborhoods. Walk into the Rollins College campus and downtown Winter Park’s fine shops and the excellent restaurants along Park Avenue. Continue around Lake Virginia into Windsong upscale development.

Directions: From Orlando take I-4 east to Exit 87, Fairbanks Ave. and drive right (east) for 3.5 miles thru Winter Park (becomes Aloma). Turn right on Lakemont Ave. Then at the 1st light, turn left on Mizell Ave. Go 2 blocks and turn right on Edinburgh, then left into the Crosby Wellness Center/YMCA. From SR 417 use Exit 38, Aloma, and turn west, drive 6 miles. Turn left on Lakemont at Walgreens (on left). Then at the 1st light, turn left on Mizell Ave. Go 2 blocks and turn right on Edinburgh, then left into the Crosby Wellness Center/YMCA.

3 February, Saturday, Maitland Walgreens

Description: Register between 900-945. Walk the 10 km route past Lakes Catherine and Sybellia. Where pets are allowed, they must be kept on a hand-held leash.

Directions: Walgreens is at 330 S Orlando Ave. From Orlando take Interstate 4 east to Exit 90A, Maitland Blvd., and exit right; from Daytona use exit 90 and turn left to the second light, Maitland Ave. Turn right, go 1.3 miles to Packwood (1 block past Horatio). Turn left, go past Police station on left and cross Orlando Ave. to Walgreens parking lot. From Sanford or Orlando drive on US 17/92 to Maitland. RR Heritage walk. Pets allowed on leash.

17 February, Saturday, Chuluota Wilderness

Description: This is a 5 and 10 km walk. It is in the Seminole County Wilderness area in Chuluota that is 620 acres of remote flora and fauna that has xeric habitats such as sand pine and oak, mesic pond pine flatwoods, and mixed hardwood swamps. Pets OK on leash only. Not suitable for wheelchairs or non jogging strollers.

Lunch available for a small fee after the walk.

Directions: Registration is from 0900-1100 at the Chuluota Baptist Church at 200 Lake Mills. You will drive 4 miles to the walk Start. From Orlando proceed east to SR 434 (Alafaya Tr.) and drive north to Oviedo. Turn RIGHT at Mitchell Hammock and drive to light at ‘T’ at Lockwood. Turn LEFT to SR 419 and turn RIGHT to Lake Mills Rd. There is a Lk. Mills Park sign. Turn LEFT to the church immediately on the right. Drive north towards Sanford on SR 417 to Red Bug Lake Rd. exit 41. Turn RIGHT and follow as above to Lockwood and follow instructions. From Daytona and Sanford on SR 417, turn LEFT on Exit 41, Red Bug Lake Rd. and follow instructions.
