Alaska Trails System

On September 21, 2001, the Alaska Trails System was established with 41 trails. These trails are recognized for their recreational, scenic, and historic value, and includes both land and water-based trails. The Alaska Trails Systems connects communities, natural areas, and trail users for the benefit of all Alaskans as well as visitors. The trails were nominated, evaluated and recommended by the Trails and Recreational Access for Alaska Citizens Advisory Board (TRAAK Board).

Benefits of creating the Alaska Trails System include:
–encouraging the development and understanding of an interconnected trail network;
–consistently identifying trails that cross jurisdictional boundaries;
assuring trails are maintained to consistent standards;
–providing educational opportunities and the promotion of public health.
