Celebrate Black History Month in Virginia

Property of Virginia Tourism OrganizationBlack History Month in Virginia is celebrated with special tours of historic sites, in concert, drama, film, soul food and exciting events. For example, the Buffalo Riders of Hampton Roads honors the memory of the Civil War’s Buffalo Soldiers on a 6-mile ride through Portsmouth. The Virginia War Museum salutes the Tuskegee Airmen of WWII and Opera Roanoke presents a tribute concert to Marian Anderson. Special tours highlighting African-American influence are planned at Jamestown, Colonial Williamsburg, the National D-Day Memorial, Monticello and other historic sites during the month of February.

Dear Missouri State Park Friends:

Missouri State Parks and CampingWelcome to the January issue of Missouri State Park eFriends. I wanted to
provide you with an update on the status of Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park.
First, I would like to thank everyone for the overwhelming support that
the park and our staff have received. It is truly gratifying to see how
much Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park means to you.

In an effort to keep the public informed on progress at the park, the
department will hold regular public meetings. The next meeting will be at
7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, at the Lesterville High School, located at
Highway 21 and Elm in Lesterville. We hope to hold these meetings the
second Thursday of each month.

Alaska Trails System

On September 21, 2001, the Alaska Trails System was established with 41 trails. These trails are recognized for their recreational, scenic, and historic value, and includes both land and water-based trails. The Alaska Trails Systems connects communities, natural areas, and trail users for the benefit of all Alaskans as well as visitors. The trails were nominated, evaluated and recommended by the Trails and Recreational Access for Alaska Citizens Advisory Board (TRAAK Board).
