Walk Through Adams National Historical Park

Adams National Historical Park is located in the City of Quincy, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, approximately ten miles south of Boston. The Park comprises 11 historic structures and a cultural landscape totaling almost 14 acres.

Adams National Park - National Park Service - U.S. Department of the InteriorThe story encompasses five generations of the Adams family (from 1720 to 1927) including two Presidents and First Ladies, three U.S.Ministers, historians, writers and family members who supported and contributed to the success of these public figures. The site’s main historic features include: John Adams Birthplace, where 2nd U.S. President John Adams was born on October 30, 1735, and less than 75 yards away the John Quincy Adams Birthplace, where his son, John Quincy Adams, 6th U.S. President was born on July 11, 1767; the “Old House,” home to four generations of the Adams family; the Stone Library contains more than 14,000 historic volumes and includes the book collection of John Quincy Adams; no tour is complete without a visit to the United First Parish Church, where both Presidents and the First Ladies are entombed in the Adams family crypt. There is an off-site visitor center located within one mile of the historic structures.

Regularly scheduled tours of the historic homes, are offered in season (April 19th - November 10th). The park provides a trolley bus that offers transportation between sites. You must be on a guided tour to enter the historic homes. Please be advised that tours are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Each of the sites is accessible by wheelchair; at the “Old House”, a picture book is available to help interpret the second floor of the house which is not accessible.

Don’t miss the Park’s interactive reenactment of the Passage of the Declaration of Independence held on July Fourth every year! Have a ghost encounter of the historic kind at the Park’s Spirits of Quincy event held each year in October. Please be aware that large bags or backpacks are not permitted in the historic homes and restrooms are located at the Visitor Center and the 1873 Carriage House.

Many park programs and special events are offered to give kids of all ages an opportunity to “Picture Themselves in the Past” and see themselves in their nation’s future. Contact the park for dates and details.

Kids of all ages! See if you have what it takes to help America to preserve and understand the importance of its national treasures. Pick up a Junior Ranger activity booklet at Adams National Historical Park Visitor Center and complete it while on tour or at home. Bring your completed booklet to the Visitor Center to receive your Badge and certificate commissioning you as a Junior Park Ranger.
